Fate and the Outer Planets

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are referred to as "the outer planets".  Transits from the outer planets to our natal charts last a long time.   In some ways, I see outer planet transits as the wheels of karma (they grind slow, but they grind fine).  We get many chances and plenty of time to learn our lessons and grow when transiting Uranus, Neptune or Pluto aspects the planets in our natal chart.

As I'm writing this, Uranus is in the first degree of Aries, Neptune is bouncing around the beginning of the sign of Pisces  and Pluto is at eight degrees Capricorn.  If you have planets in your chart in the early degrees of any sign, those planets are being stirred up  by all three of the outer planets at the same time.  This can make things feel out of control, as if fate is carrying you along through major changes.

For example, I'm feeling a bit carried along by the currents, with Pluto opposing my Moon, while Uranus squares my Moon, and Neptune trines my Moon.  This is all compounded by the Aspects that my Moon has to the other planets and points in my chart.  It's not just me, of course.  Look at your own chart for planets that are in the first couple of degrees of a sign (any planet, any sign).  If you don't have your chart, you can get one for free at astro.com .

Neptune is an illusionist and a dis-solver of things and can cause all kinds of problems, but right now I am grateful for the escapism he's offering because Uranus is being the great upsetter that he's known to be and Pluto is looming with his change or die attitude.  F.Y.I. The Moon defines a person's sense of safety and security, indicates their emotional life, represents their home, nurturing, food and numerous other things in the personality.  The Moon is one of the two "lights" (the Sun being the other one) and is a really big deal in the chart.  So, I  (and any of you who have planets in the early degrees of a sign) could look at this triple whammy of a long transit as a cluster f*ck, or see it as the universe guiding us through an enormous growth period.

Because Neptune and Pluto are in compatible earth and water signs (Pisces and Capricorn) now and Uranus is in firey Aries, you will be getting difficult transits from one or two of these planets and easier transits from the other(s).

Uranus is associated with eccentricity and surprise.  Astrology books always say to "expect the unexpected" when it comes to Uranus.  Good Uranus will give you a pleasant surprise, more friends, quirky interests and the freedom to be as weird as you want to be.  Bad Uranus will give you a nasty shock, break your electronic equipment and booger up all your plans.   Neptune is a dissolving force (like the ocean).  Neptune is the creator of images, illusions and dreams.  Good Neptune will make you creative, romantic and giving.  Bad Neptune will try to turn you into a martyr, an addict and a liar.  Good Pluto (some would call that an oxymoron, but I say, give the devil his due) will give you the power to move mountains (or remodel your house), make you too sexy for your shirt, and help you see into the depths of your own and other people's souls.  Bad Pluto...well, that is almost too horrible to think about, but Pluto rules things like death, ruthless power, the disease cancer, and total transformation (voluntary or not).

To prepare as well as you can for your transits from these outer planets, look at which house in your chart the outer planet is visiting.  Now, look at the natal planet that is being "hit" (in my case, the Moon).  What is the nature/influence of that planet?  What sign is it in?  What house is it in?  These are the areas of life and parts of your personality that are changing.  Now think about the nature of the transiting planet (as described in the paragraph above).  Now just think of it as an exchange between entities (that's why we have mythology).

You can make the changes voluntarily or they can happen "to" you, but they will happen.  When things have meaning, they are much more bearable, so you might want to read more about transits.  There are tons of books on transits.  Some books are truly helpful and some are just crap.  Your best bet is to read books written by astrologers that you know are good.  There is a good book that is just about outer planet transits by Howard Sasportas, called "The Gods of Change".
